my old badger
leading poem forum

Hi there, can I just start off by saying that I am slightly disappointed in not being able to find an animal-lovers poem section here. I suppose I can understand why there isn’t one specifically for badgers (it would have been a bonus) but I know many people who would benefit from an animal-lovers poem section.

Anyway - on with the poem. I have been writing poetry for nearly 7 years now and have always found it a relaxing, comforting thing to do with my spare time but here's the strange thing - every time I attempt to write a poem about my old badger, God rest his soul, I start getting all angry and end up throwing my biro (that's the type of pen I use) around the room. I just can’t understand it.

When I do manage to finally finish a poem about my dear old badger, I re-read it later that day and I end up hating it so much that I get all angry again. Sometimes when I throw my biro around the room I can't find it again. This makes me even more angry as I am sure you can imagine.

I guess what I am saying is that for starters I don’t want to have to keep buying new biros all the time and secondly I want to be able to write a good poem that I will be able to frame and put right next to a photo of my old badger.

My latest poem certainly isn’t the worse one I have done but I cant help but feel that it "sounds" a bit angry - does anyone know what I mean?! Please can someone at least make a comment and let me know what you feel.

Thanks

My old badger died a lonely death
My old badger wasn't sad
My old badger used to drink meths
My old badger wasn't bad

My old badger didn't have a name
My old badger ate a vole
My old badger smiled when he came
My old badger - not a mole

My old badger was my bestest friend
My old badger killed a bee
My old badger wasn't on the mend
My old badger and me

Is this for real?

I can't believe the day has come for this post to actually show up! Oh My God, what has the world come to?

Excuse me?!

Can I ask what you mean by this please? I am seeking HELP with the writing of a poem about an animal I used to love.

I didn’t think I would get a response like that! If you can't help me then maybe someone else can.

And for the record, yes this is for real.

Ronald Summers

My condolences, Ron.

I think a black frame would be appropriate. Perhaps with a white edge.

Lyn

Can no-one take me seriously?! I don't understand. If anyone is reading this that wants to just reply with another sarcastic remark, could you be a little more helpful instead and maybe point me in the direction of a website where people actually want to help each other?!

I know it's a little weird about my badger but I have been told that for the last few years by so many people. I thought that maybe here on the internet, maybe someone would be able to understand.

Maybe I was wrong. If anyone has any creative help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again

Ronald Summers

Sorry, Ronald.

I like the abab rhyme scheme you have going in here- I think it worked for this style. But in this poem they all sounded too forced. The constant repetition of "my old badger" was getting a little tedious, but was still okay, almost sweet, although I really only liked your last line. But the overall feel of your poem was not at all angry- I know you were worried about that. It had many interesting details- your badger drank meths? But then it had some stupidly boring or obvious details like he wasn't a mole. But, on the whole, I really enjoyed your poem. Really.

If this poem is heartfelt, and serves to be special to only you and the purpose, then I suppose there is no need for you to change it. I am sure your badger was lucky to have such a devoted owner.

Have you really been writing poetry for 7 years? Have you also been reading any good poetry? That should help a lot in your writing.

I know what you mean about frustration in writing. I don't chuck biros though. Haha. Hope to read more from you, actually.

Lyn

Ronald, your post made me smile. I'm sorry about your badger, though it sounds like he lead a good life. : )

Lyn covered basically everything I would have said about your poem. The biggest thing I have to say is that it bothers me when people say "bestest friend," but I see how that would work better with your rhythm. Perhaps "dearest," or "closest" could be substituted.

Good luck on holding onto those biros.

Oh! Another thing. We don't specifically have an animal section, but there is a pretty extensive Nature section, and I'm sure your poems would fit in quite well there. Or else friendship poems, if they're like this one. Hope that helps!

Thank You! Finally a genuine response! Honestly that means more than you could know!

I think I know what you mean about the repetition - somewhere in my head I think that the fact that every line starts the same represents that every morning that I woke up, I always saw him. Maybe for a poem though this doesn’t work but as you said yourself - this poem is really for me.

I am so glad that you think the overall feel wasn’t angry - you are right - I did worry about that. I certainly don’t want to sound angry at all.

Please don't think my badger drank meths all the time - I guess just from that one line then that's what it sounds like. There was really only one time where he did that. Well, there was one more time after that too but that time he hardly drank any.

The bit about him not being a mole needs explanation too. Before I chose to have a badger I was originally going to have a mole instead. I did find a mole but once you've been bitten by a mole without any warning at all - you wouldn’t want one as a pet either!

Thank you for what you said about him being lucky to have a devoted owner - that means a lot. I would hope that if he had been able to talk, he would have said the same.

I am not lying when I say I have been writing for 7 years. I don't lie. Are there any poems that you would consider I read? I guess this site would be a good place to start yeah?

Please don’t think I am angry all the time though - I don’t want to throw biros you know!!

Once again, thanks for your help!

Ronald Summers

Sorry, I just think it's funny. I have never heard of a poem about a badger.

You learn something new every day i s'pose... I am living proof.

I am sorry about your badger hun, but I am sorry to say i also chuckled. Maybe its the idea of writing poetry about a badger, sorry. Urm maybe put some more feeling into your poem. I lost my hamster a few weeks ago and it made me real sad put emotion into your poem,
and I suggest you find a pen that makes a noise or sumfin so you can find it.
